Hebrew Woman (Ivriyah)

Translated by Bruce J. Berger and Eyal Haim
To me, Daughter of Miriam – Hebrew Woman (Ivriyah)

“I am dark and pretty”
— Song of Songs, Ch. 1, Verse 5

I gaze at her, astonished,
It seems like her, but look
Her old graces, in darkness and in heat
Come from our Holy Book.

And a fine bridge leads away from her
To the holy land of Jews,
Linking up to memories of love
Our souls’ fire that we choose.

In this strange landscape my vision moves
(How many paths may there be?)
I change as well in darkness and heat
In the light blue streams I see.

But if I stole – not forever
Because I felt – not to the end
And I came back again to the way
To the place where we began

I shall stand here in front of you,
My sister, shocked with great surprise,
In old graces, in darkness and in heat
I will feed my light blue eyes.
