The Deep Dive

This practice of our particular brand of loving
Is an unnerving and relentless remembering.

Both of us, struggling in the narcissus-kiss
Of our each-other-ness,
Powerless in the face of this
Singular fluid reflection.

We are freefall,
But forward this time,
Together,
In side-by-side tandem,
And, hand-in-hand,
The sand shore shrinks behind
Our neighboring backs
As we slip into the blackness.

This is a prayer for kindness
Toward our occasional panic,
Breath shallowing and quick in our chests.
We are unmoored here,
This leap of faith,
This limitless risk,
Feels more real-life
Or death with every passing day.

We yearn for all the learning we can muster.
And we deeply understand this
As we plunge into each other.

As we
Hold on
For dear life.

Arms wrapping like branches.
Legs like roots reaching
Into the unfathomable deep,
No purchase to seek.
Our next-door hearts
Knocking from inside
Against selfsame wetwall.

This gift of revelation,
This blessing of breath,
This precious resuscitation,
This awakening to
To our
Separate simultaneous self-salvation:
Into existence.

This practice of our particular brand of loving
Is an unnerving and relentless remembering.
